Platform 4, an initiative of QUSS in collaboration with bolwerK, from 25th of July until the 18th of August, Designcenter de Winkelhaak.
In the exhibition space a steeplejack is installed. It holds a platform with a size of two square meters and covered with fake grass. Since the exhibition space is in the basement, the platform is now positioned on ground level. This makes it possible to observe what is happening within and outside the building. The distance between this platform and the surrounding walls defining the exhibition space, can't be physically bridged.
Different artists occupied this plateau. They worked with the different features connected to this specific position, within the building, the surrounding streets and the city. "Platform 4" functions as a working space, a meeting point, an observation spot, a contact space and a source of inspiration. Next to all this is an exhibited space. This means that all actions of the participants on the plateau are exhibited. From the platform it is possible to observe the environment, but the environment also has the opportunity to observe what is happenig on the platform, so in these circumstances everybody is a viewer.
During this month the platform was used as a tool to organize and "file" an archive of props, artworks, souvenirs and printed matter. The platform arose in this special occasion to literally create an overview, necessary to get control over this huge amount of material. The archive resolved out of a six month residence in Brussels by bolwerK.
Alan Quireyns used the platform as an observation point. Within the period of seven days, he occupied the platform from 9 o'clock until 6 o'clock in the evening. Each day he wrote a tale, starting from the visual input conceived on the platform. The result became visual in seven texts, a mixture of personal feelings during this performance, combined with the (fictional) lives of the people he saw passing every day.
Ilke De Vries worked with the platform as a fixed point in space, necessary to legitimate herself to film there. It gave her the possibility to research and film the neighbourhood. During the filming the camera was connected with a monitor on ground floor, so the viewer could see the different focusses from the platform. She also interviewed people passing by or living in this neighbourhood.
In collaboration with graphic designers Jeroen Wille and Thomas Desmet a publication will be made, combining the written texts of Alan Quireyns with film stills and interviews of Ilke De Vries. This publication will be conceived as an art piece of itself, starting from this project, but not necessarly registrating it. This edition will be available by contacting QUSS vzw.
